August 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PDT

MICHAEL E. LEKAWA, MD, FACS
PROFESSOR AND CHIEF, DIVISION OF TRAUMA, BURNS, SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE AND ACUTE CARE SURGERY,
UCI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Michael E. Lekawa, MD, FACS

Many studies show that treatment of rib fractures with operative fixation reduces ventilator requirements, intensive care unit stay, and length of hospital stay, pain medication requirements & pulmonary complications.  Rib fractures are among the most common traumatic injury of patients who suffer blunt (car accidents, falls, and assault) and penetrating (gunshot) injuries. This session will review the current evidence and provide proposed indications based on best available evident and current expert opinion.

Desired Outcomes:

  • Recognize patterns of rib trauma, including fracture classification
  • Distinguish between common imaging pitfalls (e.g., non-traumatic mimics)
  • Identify Common complications and integrate basic principles of management
