SPECIAL PEDIATRICS Department Grand Rounds: The State of Child Health in the World, 2019
September 20 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PDT
Presented By: George W. Rutherford, MD, AM
The state of child health in the world is rapidly changing, largely due to large-scale public health programs. The number of deaths among children under 5 worldwide decreased from 12.7 million in 1990 to 6.3 million in 2015. Greatest strides have been made among 1-5 years olds due to immunization, bed nets, and integrated management of childhood illnesses. This presentation reviews the current state of child health in the world and outlines the remaining challenges and how they relate to pediatric practice in the United States.
- Describe trends in neonatal, infant and child mortality
- Identify leading causes of death in each of these groups
- Describe geographic variations in morbidity and mortality worldwide and demographically in the United States
- Match child survival strategies and interventions to particular situations
