What do we know…..pediatric appendicitis:

  • Most frequent surgical cause of abdominal pain in children (77,000 Pediatric US discharges )
  • Most common between the ages of 10-20
  • males:female 1.4:1
  • Simple Appendicitis = absence of complications (perforation, gangrene or abscess
  • Complicated Appendicitis = presence of ≥ 1 complication
  • Acute appendicitis – Most Common

Desired Outcomes:

  • Describe initial evaluation of perforated appendicitis
  • Recognize indications for early referral
  • Compare surgical approach vs Interventional Radiology approach
  • Describe Interval appendectomy
