Reducing Obesity in Diabetes

October 22 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm PDT

Free
Vanessa Victoria Thompson, MD, Clinical Professor, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine

Presented ByVanessa Victoria Thompson, MD

The 2012 IOM Report on Obesity urged clinicians to “advocate for institutional, community and state-level strategies to improve physical activity and nutrition resources for patients and communities.” Despite wide spread acceptance by physicians that advocacy is a professional obligation, the skills and knowledge required to successfully engage in policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change interventions is not part of traditional medical training. The Champion Provider Fellowship is a promising model to engage practicing physicians in PSE-level work through skill development and facilitative linkages with local health departments and community based organizations.

Desired Outcomes:

  •  Compare and contrast different definitions of physician advocate and associated roles.
  • Define facilitators and barriers to physician advocacy.
  • Outline a promising model to train and support physician advocates in their communities around policy, systems and environmental change interventions.
