October 24 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PDT

Free
Ira D. Glick, MD, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Department of Psychiatry,
Stanford University School of Medicine

Presented ByIra D. Glick, MD

At least 50 percent of patients undergoing surgery take medications on a regular basis. Clinicians often must decide if chronic medications should be continued in the perioperative period. Unfortunately, there are few outcome data about the majority of medications taken in the perioperative period.  When, Why, and How-to… discontinuing neuropsychiatric medications before surgery, or during emergency treatment, or trauma will be discussed.

Desired Outcomes:

  • Analyze the risks and benefits underlying perioperative management of neuropsychiatric medications.
  • Recognize the importance of continuing certain neuropsychiatric medications preoperatively.
  • List the theoretical risks of continuing neuropsychiatric medications and decide whether or not to discontinue them.
